Academic integrity case study
Keeping an authentic voice under deadline pressure
Business management essay drafted across four evenings, with a part-time job in between.
Illustrative worked example. This describes how the workflow handles a common coursework situation. It is not a testimonial and is not attributed to any individual student. Genuine student accounts are published on /proof only with the student's consent.
The problem
Tired late-night writing was drifting into stiff, borrowed phrasing that did not sound like the student's seminar contributions or their earlier submitted work. That inconsistency is exactly what triggers an authorship query, even when every word is genuinely the student's own — and proving authorship after the fact is far harder than avoiding the question.
Stage by stage
Where the student started
Four evenings of drafting around shift work. Paragraphs written at 1am read nothing like paragraphs written on a day off, and the student could feel it without being able to name what had changed.
Before drafting — building the profile
The writing profile captured normal sentence length, connective habits, hedging patterns and British English spelling from earlier work the student had written unaided.
Stage 4 — Academic voice composer
Passages that drifted from that profile were flagged, not rewritten. Each flag showed what had shifted — sentence length doubling, an unfamiliar register, a connective the student never uses — and the student decided whether to keep the phrasing or put it back into their own words.
Stage 5 — Consistency review
A final pass compared the whole draft against the profile, so the piece read as one voice rather than four evenings stitched together.
After submission
Full draft history remained exportable, so the development from rough notes to final draft could be shown on request without scrambling for evidence weeks later.
Where we stopped
Flagging is advisory only. OwnVoice will not substitute its own phrasing into a draft, because a voice check that rewrites for you defeats its own purpose — it would replace the very thing it claims to protect.
What working this way achieves
- Register consistent across sessions, matching the student's earlier unaided work.
- Every flagged passage resolved by the student's own decision, not an automatic rewrite.
- Timestamped draft history available as authorship evidence if ever requested.
These are method outcomes. OwnVoice makes no promises about grades, and no case study on this site claims one.
